Had an exceptional 1995 season playing prop or second row the CRC Colts and went on to represent the New Zealand Maori and New Zealand Under 18 teams. Watene capped off his year by representing Tonga in the 1995 World Cup and this season he tasted success with Counties-Manukau in the national club competition.
